Hola!

Today I am joining Jess of Domicile 37 along with some friends to share Eddie Ross inspired decor for the Inspired by DIY challenge.  I am loving this month’s inspiration theme of Eddie Ross!  A couple months ago I shared how my home design is inspired by Eddie Ross, which you can read here.  I’m breaking down Eddie’s style today to share how you can mix plates like Eddie Ross and create a modern mix spring tablescape inspired by Eddie Ross.  In case you have not read Eddie’s book, it is a fantastic read full of inspiring decor as well as tips on how to restore vintage flea market finds.  You can purchase the book here!  I always have my copy available in my living room for any guest to read.

How to style like Eddie Ross

In essence, Eddie Ross’ coined Modern Mix style as a mixture of color, patterns, finishes, and vintage finds.  So, to recreate the look in your home you’ll need to shop your home or head on down to the flea market.  I prefer to do both!

HOW TO CREATE AN EDDIE ROSS INSPIRED SPRING TABLESCAPE

1. Start with a colorful tablecloth!

Notice that both samples of Eddie Ross tablescapes above have bright patterned tablecloths.  Many of Eddie Ross’ tablescapes utilize a standout vintage tablecloth.  Sometimes, you can even find great tablecloths at thrift stores or flea markets.  You can also shop your home for bright, patterned curtains or bed linens.  For my tablescape example, I decided to use a bright striped yellow throw.

2. Gather at least 2 coordinating plates.

Eddie has a great guide for mixing plates in his book.  However, you can create the look simply by coordinating your own plates or thrifty finds.  I prefer to use at least 3 plates, but you should utilize at least 2 plates and one may be a charger plate.  To coordinate your plates, use the most detailed plate to extract the color palette for the remaining dishes.

I wanted to use vibrant colorful bowls as the basis of my tablescape. So, I extracted the white color, the green, and added blue as an accent.  I used a larger floral plate, plain white plates, as well as blue willow china plates to provide a bit of contrast in the designs.  I also included my DIY palm leaf utensil rings to add a bit of tropical flair.

3.  Add unique vintage finds that tell a story

One of the best things about decorating with flea market finds are the great stories that can be told while enjoying a meal.  Eddie Ross has a wonderful talent of choice just the right pieces for his tablescapes.  When choosing your vintage pieces, it’s a good idea to use pieces that can serve as a vase too!  Eddie used a beautiful ceramic vase and stunning vintage swans for floral arrangements in the two tables shared earlier.

I used a thrifted antique silver sugar bowl for a mini floral arrangement as well as small ceramic chinoiserie planter bowls for a fruit arrangement.  The mini blue bird was incorporated as a conversation piece.  This cute little bird was a wedding gift, which apparently represents a long marriage full of happiness.
