DIY Aztec Art: Create and Share Challenge

I received product to review for this post, however all opinions and thoughts are mine alone.

Hola!
It’s Create and Share Challenge Day!  The Create and Share Challenge is a monthly DIY event I host where I invite some blogging friends to a themed home DIY project challenge.  You can see all the past challenges by clicking on my Create and Share Challenge page.  This month, I challenged bloggers to two challenges spanning today and tomorrow.  Today’s challenge was to use Wise Owl Chalk Synthesis Paint  to give a new look to furniture or a home decor item.  I am blown away by all the great projects!  We also have a great giveaway for a wonderful paint package from Wise Owl at the end of this post.  So be sure to enter that fun giveaway today!

We were given a pint of paint to use for this challenge.  I have two projects for this challenge and am sharing how to create this nifty Aztec artwork with Snow Owl white chalk synthesis paint and clear wax.  I’ve been wanted to create this art piece for a while, so I was so pleased to be able to create it with Wise Owl chalk synthesis paint. The paint dried so fast on my wood board and was easy to use.

I love Aztec patterns and have been seeing them in so many places.  Now, you can make your own Aztec art using Wise Owl Chalk Synthesis paint.  Start by shaking your can of paint then stirring the contents prior to using the paint.  This will redistribute the paint contents, which is necessary to have it adhere effectively.

Prep your surface by cleaning it with a dry towel.  I used a basswood plaque for my art piece to make my artwork look more authentic.  There is something about having a wood background that just makes the Aztec art work pop.  Tape off your design with painter’s tape or washi tape.  I found inspiration for my design in Aztec rugs, pillows, and other Aztec artwork.

1. Artwork// 2. Rug // 3. Pillows

I’m not a big fan of taping, but it’s so important to tape off your design for this project.  Should you want to take a chance and free hand paint the design, feel free to do so.  I’d love to see how it looks to take a walk on the wild side, haha.

I applied two coats of the Snow Owl colored paint and waited about 10 minutes between coats.  It was already feeling quite dry as I was finishing the first coat.  You will be surprised how fast this paint will dry.

Apply a clear wax to protect your painted surface after your artwork is completely dry.  Install hanging brackets to the back of the wood should you want to hang your art piece.  Or, simply lean your artwork on a tabletop for a relaxed feel.
