Carro-Car Theme Bilingual Tot School Week 1

Hola mis amigos!

It is back to school this week with Bilingual Tot School!  If you are new to Casa Watkins, bienvenido a mi casa!  Every Saturday I will either highlight our tot school activities for the week, share tot school advice, discuss my experiences raising bilingual children or other mommy advice for my Spanish Sabado series.  Today, it’s all about our first week of tot school and cars!

This year, I plan to concentrate on the same theme for two weeks.  We had some interesting experiences with our carro or car themed activities this week.  Nugget (3 years) had a great time with the activities, while Chi-Chi (2 years) had some trouble.  Though, she had a cold and wasn’t feeling great.

Tot school this week focused on writing skills as well as fine/gross motor skills within the Carro (Car) themed.  This was a perfect theme to start discussing transportation methods and review colors.  We started with a couple carro themed printables.  Nugget has experience with tot notebooks, so he was eager to complete the printables on his own.

Chi-Chi, however, had another idea in mind.  She scribbled on the paper then began throwing the marker.  This is perfectly normal for a 2 year old starting tot school.  I didn’t give up though.  I helped her by guiding her hand on the printable.

We also counted the little guys and carros on the printable.  Chi-Chi will typically have printables in English, but it wasn’t a big deal today since this was her first day.

Each tot then completed some pom pom sorting to help their fine motor skills.  Chi-Chi, once again, had another plan for this activity.  Instead of sorting the pom poms, she wanted to put them all in the white container and shake them out.  I redirected her to sorting using the grabbers, but she then became more interested in the grabber.

Nugget sorted the colors and named them as he transferred them to the tray.  I lucked out with these lunch trays.  They were only $1 at a local thrift store and are great for sorting activities.

We finished our table work with some handwriting practice.  Nugget loves writing his name.  He has mastered writing the letters of his first name and is just learning to write his last name.

Chi-Chi was not enthused about handwriting.  It is a little advanced for her age.  Instead, we reviewed the letters of her name and traced them with her finger.

After handwriting, it was time for a gross motor activity.  I placed some labeled color sorters made from wipe containers on the table and gave them both a basket full of colorful cars.  I instructed them to sort the cars into the containers by color.  This was a hit!

I had Nugget say the colors of the car in Spanish before placing them into the container.

Chi-Chi loved sorting the cars from the basket first, then placing them into the container.

Next week, we will be concentrating on math and reading skills within our carro theme.  I am updating my printables page on the blog, so look out for these Free printable tot packs on the blog soon.
