Sponge Holder from Upcycled Bagel Slicer

Upcycled Bagel Slicer into Kitchen Sponge Holder

Happy Thursday Amigos!  It’s a late post for me today as I spent my day entertaining the kids at Sesame Place.  Great fun for toddlers, I must say.

Have you been following Casa Watkins on Facebook?  Yesterday I posted a pic on Facebook yesterday asking if you could guess what I made from a thrift store bagel slicer.  Well, amigos, here it is.  My upcycled or repurposed sponge holder from a bagel slicer.

I typically have my sponge sitting right on the sink’s edge or in a little basket to the side.  The bagel slicer was a thrift store purchase from way back when and it has been collecting dust in my basement ever since.  I knew what I wanted to do with the bagel slicer as soon as I had seen it.  I get to do all sorts of projects for the house now that the Summer has started.  Are you excited?  I am so pumped to dish out a slew of Summer projects.

Here is my before picture.  Just a typical bagel slicer.  Nothing fancy about it.

I took the opportunity to try some color blocking.  I haven’t painted anything in a color block pattern before.  It was an interesting experience.  The waiting for paint to dry before placing the next color can be a little long.  Otherwise, it was a simple technique to execute.

First, tape off any area that will not be painted at all.  Then spray on your base color on your item.  I chose gold, of course.

Once that is dry, tape off the area you would like to keep your base color and the area that will be painted your third color.  Spray on your second color and let that dry.  Finally, tape off all painted areas and spray on your third color to the final exposed area.

Shape color blocking is so fetch…..Do you get that reference from Mean Girls?  Yeah it was a poor joke. 🙁  Regardless, the shaped color blocking is really hot and chic.  I decided to try triangles and rectangles.  This made the taping process a bit more interesting.  In the end, I just love the color combination I chose and the shaped color blocks.

The sponge holder brings color right to the sink area.  Plus, I always know where the sponge is!  Use a water proof sealer spray to finish your sponge holder.  It is wooden, so you want to protect the wood from becoming warped and grimey.

If you do not need a sponge holder, you could easily paint your bagel slicer in the same way and use it to hold pens, crafting markers, scissors, note cards, basically any item you can think of.

Thanks so much for stopping by my casa!
